The U.S. is a forerunner in privatization of prisons.
Prison companies like the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), have access to public money for housing prisoners.
CCA operates therefore massive lobbying for harsher punishment even for minor offenses. At the same time, more and more companies discover the opportunity to produce at minimal cost and to maximize their own profits in prisons.
This submission of the prisons under the principles of exploitation and profit is exported to other countries. In Germany it is also already discussed, to „reform“ the prison system in this direction.
Corporations such as Microsoft, IBM, Boeing, Dell, Intel and AT & T are exploiting prisoners with low wages ruthlessly.
While saving the costs for jobs, for save health care, etc., at the same time they have the advantage of significant tax benefits.
With underpaid inmates the wages of the whole society get permanently under pressure.
