“ethecon - Foundation Ethics & Economics„ is awarding this year’s international positive “Blue Planet Award” to the Indian author, environmental and civil rights activist and feminist Vandana Shiva, who earned her PhD in Quantum Physics and was honored with the 1993 Right Livelihood Award, the ‚Alternative Nobel Prize‘. With this annual international award ethecon now for the second time honors an individual for outstanding commitment to the preservation of our Blue Planet.
Vandana Shiva has long become a figurehead in the struggle for a better and more just world. Besides her engagement for the rights of the indigenous Indian people, the energetic Indian is famous for her efforts to enrich the ecological debate with the womanly outlook of Ecofeminism. Highly critical of ‚globalization‘ she also campaigns for the protection of seeds and has been fighting successfully against the ‚biopiracy‘ of the large seed companies. All over the world the physicist supports campaigns against GMOs and presents alternative approaches to sustainability, natural diversity and fair trade. Author of more than 20 books, she is also actively engaged in the movements for peace and democracy, as demonstrated by her current engagement with regard to the military dictatorship in Burma.
The “Black Planet Award 2007„ - counterpart to the “Blue Planet Award„ - is granted to Peter Brabeck-Letmathe (chairman of the board of Nestlé) and to Liliane Bettencourt (major shareholder of Nestlé), who stand for the controlling stockholders and the responsible management of the NESTLÉ-trust. Axel Köhler-Schnura, ethecon chairman and founding donor: “With the international „Black Planet Award 2007“ we are denouncing NESTLÉ‚s outstanding irresponsibility in terms of endangering and ruining our Blue Planet. Management and stockholders of this Swiss corporation are, inter alia, to blame for the irresponsible marketing of baby-food, genetic engineering and the monopolizing of water.„
